What is an eye ultrasound?
An eye ultrasound, or ocular ultrasound, is a painless, non-invasive diagnostic procedure that uses sound waves to provide accurate images of the eye. With advanced ultrasound imaging at Ultrasound Insight, we explore the eye's internal structures, like the retina, lens, vitreous, and optic nerve.
This type of scan is especially useful when the rear of the eye cannot be viewed directly, such as when cataracts, scarring or bleeding will not allow the doctor to see. Because it is radiation-free, eye ultrasound is suitable for patients of any age.
When should an eye ultrasound be performed?
Your eye specialist might refer you for an ultrasound if:
Your vision has suddenly clouded up or weakened
There is a suspected retinal tear or detachment
There is bleeding within the eye (vitreous haemorrhage)
There is an intraocular tumour or foreign body to be found
Eye size or optic nerve thickness has to be measured
Eye ultrasound can also be used to follow-up on ongoing conditions and to inform decisions about treatment.
What does the scan entail?
Eye ultrasound at Ultrasound Insight is quick and painless and usually takes under 15 minutes. Gel is applied to the eyelid. The small probe is gently positioned over the region to capture images. The test is pleasant and you can return to normal activities immediately after.
