Ganglion cysts are fluid-filled lumps that are benign but are most commonly found over joints or tendons. They commonly present on the wrist, hand, or foot. Though benign, the cyst can be painful, limit motion, or compress nerves to result in interference with everyday activities.
They are most typical in adults aged 20-40 and are slightly more prevalent in women. They will fluctuate in size and even resolve on their own. When painful or if it is impairing mobility, however, a doctor's examination is appropriate.
Classic Signs and Symptoms of Ganglion Cysts
A noticeable or visible mass near a joint, most commonly the wrist or ankle
Pain or tenderness, especially with joint motion
A feeling of weakness in the affected joint
Numbness or paresthesia if an overlying nerve is compressed
What Triggers Ganglion Cysts?
Even though the reason why is uncertain, ganglion cysts are thought to be caused by irritation of the tendon or joint. The following factors contribute to their formation:
Repetitive stress: Found in athletes and workers
History of joint or tendon injury: Trauma or scar tissue may cause cysts to form
Osteoarthritis: Especially in finger joint fingertips
