Why is paediatric hip ultrasound required?
Ultrasound of the paediatric hip is a harmless and painless way to check on the development of a baby's hips. It is most commonly employed to detect developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH), a condition where the hip joint doesn’t form properly. The earlier it can be diagnosed, the better, as treatment is best done in the first few months of life and can prevent eventual mobility impairment.
At Ultrasound Insight, we provide regular hip ultrasounds for infants referred by paediatric professionals and GPs around Brisbane.
When is the test indicated?
Your GP might recommend a hip ultrasound if:
Your baby was delivered breech (bottom first)
There is a family history of hip dysplasia
The newborn examination revealed hip instability or unequal movement
There was a "clicking" sound heard with movement of the legs
In most cases, hip ultrasounds are performed at 4-6 weeks of age in case there is a problem.
How is the test performed?
The scan is calming and simple. Your baby is likely to be on his back or side while our sonographer places a small hand-held probe over the hip area using warm gel. The test is painless and usually takes just 20 minutes. Since ultrasound uses sound waves, there is no risk or side effect.
